2h 6min. // Set in Chicago in the late 1920s, during the days of Prohibition, the film tells the story of Joe E. Lewis (played by Frank Sinatra), a rising singer of the Club 777, a speakeasy owned by Georgie Parker, known for his ties with the mob.

Lewis’ life turns upside down when he leaves Georgie and accepts the offer of another club owner who gives him more money. His decision almost cost his life as a couple of Parker’s men attack him badly, fracturing his skull and cutting his throat. Miraculously, he survives the aggression, but the wounds end his career as a singer.

Bleak, he starts working as a clown in low rated vaudeville acts. But suddenly, he returns to the spotlight when his old friend Sophie Tucker makes him sing on stage with her. With his voice damaged, he can’t hit the high notes, so he uses his acerbic and sharp sense of humor to disarm the audience and he realizes his talent for comedy. Soon, Lewis makes a great career as a comedian, but his drinking problems and his self-destructive behaviour lead him to question his life.

Based on Art Cohn’s biography The Life of Joe. E. Lewis, The Joker is Wild is one of the most memorable Frank Sinatra’s films.

1h 27min. // A sermon by Rev. John Burrows (Sterling Hayden), is interrupted as his wife, Jane (Peggy Webber), walks down the center aisle of the church. She feels she can not keep up with her husband’s ambition and sense of importance, and she commits suicide. In a grave-side rejection of religion, John blames his parishioners rather than himself. He runs of and wanders around the country. After being jailed as a vagrant, he ends up in the Bowery section of New York City. The head of a skid-row mission, “Doc’ Thorssen (Ludwig Donath’) and his blind daughter, Christine (Viveca Lindfors), take care of him and give him a job as a janitor.

1h 40min. // After Joan’s (Jane Russell) husband dies in the war, Joan feels she will never love again. Until she meets Lt. Jim Cameron (Louis Hayward). She shrugs him off as a man trying too hard to win her affection, but will she give him a second chance when they meet again?

This is a lovely film and one of Jane Russell’s first. Louis and Jane have such lovely chemistry together and the supporting cast is wonderful as well. Fun fact: Jane developed a crush on Louis while filming!

1h 17min. // Bent on revenge for the death of his father and the theft of their ranch, young Bill Walton rides into town seeking the aid of his uncle. As he rides into town, he takes a bullet meant for gambler Matt Daggett and across the street lies his uncle, victim of the gambler’s gun. Dagget looks on Bill as ‘good luck’ and nurses him back to health and gives him the job of training “Blue Chip”, the fastest quarter horse in the west, for a big race. Bill doesn’t know that Dagget plans to fix the race and put his own money on another horse at heavy odds. Quartered at the nearby ranch of John Grant, Bill meets Jerri Marshall, daughter of Bob Marshall, who lost “Blue Chip” to Daggett in a crooked gambling deal. Grant gets mixed up in a stage coach robbery and killing and rides back to the ranch with Daggett henchman Red Roper. When Roper tries to molest a woman, Bill bluffs him with an empty gun and forces him back to town. Roper is arrested for the killing and implicates Grant.
