When he crosses paths with Gabriel Dupre, a solitary French fur-trapper, instinct and curiosity give way to a tentative trust, and soon man and dog form a bond that bridges the divide between wilderness and civilization.

Life at the trading post, however, is far less noble than life in the snowbound forests. A corrupt post manager schemes to ruin Gabriel, coveting both his hard-won furs and the affection of his sweetheart. When the Wolf-Dog is framed for attacking a baby, fear and suspicion turn the settlement against him, and he flees back into the unforgiving wild.
