12min. // Considered the first sci-fi movie, A Trip to the Moon is a French silent film directed by Georges Méliès. Inspired by a wide variety of sources, including Jules Verne’s novels From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon, the film follows a group of astronomers who travel to the Moon in a cannon-propelled capsule, explore the Moon’s surface, escape from an underground group of Selenites (lunar inhabitants), and return to Earth with a captive Selenite. It features an ensemble cast of French theatrical performers, led by Méliès himself in the main role of Professor Barbenfouillis, and is filmed in the overtly theatrical style for which Méliès became famous.

How Green Was My Valley (1941)

The story is set in a small Welsh mining village in the late 19th century and follows the life of Huw Morgan, a young boy who grows up in a close-knit community of miners and their families.

As the story unfolds, we see how the lives of the villagers are intertwined, and how they struggle to survive in the face of the harsh realities of mining life. Huw’s family, in particular, faces many challenges, including his father’s injury in a mining accident, his brother’s struggle with the decision to leave the village and work in the mines, and his own growing awareness of the class divisions and injustices that exist in his world.

Through it all, Huw finds comfort in the love and support of his family, and in the beauty of the valley that surrounds them. But as the coal industry begins to decline, the villagers’ way of life is threatened, and they are forced to confront the harsh realities of an uncertain future.

The Joker Is Wild (1957)

2h 6min. // Set in Chicago in the late 1920s, during the days of Prohibition, the film tells the story of Joe E. Lewis (played by Frank Sinatra), a rising singer of the Club 777, a speakeasy owned by Georgie Parker, known for his ties with the mob.

Lewis’ life turns upside down when he leaves Georgie and accepts the offer of another club owner who gives him more money. His decision almost cost his life as a couple of Parker’s men attack him badly, fracturing his skull and cutting his throat. Miraculously, he survives the aggression, but the wounds end his career as a singer.

Bleak, he starts working as a clown in low rated vaudeville acts. But suddenly, he returns to the spotlight when his old friend Sophie Tucker makes him sing on stage with her. With his voice damaged, he can’t hit the high notes, so he uses his acerbic and sharp sense of humor to disarm the audience and he realizes his talent for comedy. Soon, Lewis makes a great career as a comedian, but his drinking problems and his self-destructive behaviour lead him to question his life.

Based on Art Cohn’s biography The Life of Joe. E. Lewis, The Joker is Wild is one of the most memorable Frank Sinatra’s films.
